Sep. 29, 2012: Last Flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour On this day we gathered on the roof of our building. The space shuttle "Endeavour" was expected to be transported to Los Angeles for its final destination in the California Science Center: http://californiasciencecenter.org/exhibits/air-space/space-shuttle-endeavour I am not sure if they took off from Travis Air Force Base, or from NASA Moffett Field. We hoped to see the shuttle somewhere atop of a Jumbo Jet, but we have not expected to see them overflying our exact location, with its F16 escort. It is worth to document this last memorable flight of this shuttle. Dec. 11, 2022: Space Shuttle Endeavour on Display 10 years later I saw this Shuttle again on its temporary display in the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, Los Angeles, California. As of 2026 the Shuttle is off the display pending its final installation. The California Science Center will be the only place in the world to see a complete Space Shuttle System mated to real solid rocket boosters and ET-94, the last remaining flight-qualified external tank, so the official notice posted by the Museum. (Another shuttle "Atlantis" is on display at the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, FL). The Air and Space Center in Los Angeles hosts a variety of exhibitions. Several signs point toward the Oschin Hall where the Endeavour was on display. At the parking the visitor can see the famous Blackbird espionage plane, and has to cross several halls to arrive finally at the Space Shuttle gallery. Fascinating are the details, numerous connecting inlets, jet outlets and the heat protection composed of tiles and other materials. 2 shuttles were lost in tragic accidents: Challenger at start and Columbia upon reentry. Plaques in black and white commemorate the lost crews. The entire exhibition encompasses a variety of subjects. I think it is in context of space exploration to show also Gemini capsule and a model of a Hubble Telescope from their collection. |
