Tahiti Fete 2012, San Jose, CA On the day of our visit the program indicated amateur group dances. Compared to previous years, the scope of the event was smaller. The effect of the economical downturn was clearly visible. The 1st part of the day was in fact so unremarkable and with some organizational problems, that we even begun to wonder if the entry price was justified... However, after the lunch break we have thankfully seen several large ensembles and their flamboyant costumes. For a while, at least. Later on we also saw lengthy performances of drumming teams, if you are into such type of music. The most unique display came though at the very end. We almost left already, when a dancer group from Tonga appeared. They presented a truly exotic folklore and customs. We never saw before a genuine Tonga dance performance! Some dancers were... covered in oil, and one female dancer received numerous dollar bills stuck to her body and costume. People keep throwing money at her, literally(!), and later a group of "keiki's" collected the numerous bills scattered on the dancing stage. We were very curious if this is a real Tonga Islander custom, or just a special event? |
