Royal Residenz in München, 12.Aug.2002 Family von Wittelsbach ruled Bayern (Bavaria) for ca. 700 years. This gave them enough time to collect priceles pieces of art. Their rule ended in the late the 19th century time as king Ludwig II run the country into financial ruin and was deposed as "mentally ill." Chancellor of the Prussian king Wilhelm, duke Otto von Bismarck, grasped the change to "swallow" Bavaria and make it a part of a united Germany without firing a shot. This was the end of the White-Blue Bavarian independence. To this day Bavaria protects it special status, dialect and local folklore inside of the Federal Republic of Germany. Most notably Bavarians like to call everybody else "a Preuß" (a Prussian) in living memory of that antagonism toward the powerful neighbor in Berlin. The Residenz was severely damaged during the war. Large parts of the collection were salvaged and kept outside of the city. After the war they were brought back to the Museum under US patronage. |
