CGX: Meigs Field, Chicago. 24.Jul.2000 This was the 3rd day of our journey to Oshkosh 2000. We knew about the problems with Meigs Field and the danger of its closure. We were strongly motivated to land there. This could be our last chance to do so. We navigated via OBK (Northbrook) VOR to Lake Michigan. Then we turned right toward the south to photograph the magnificent shoreline of Chicago. During our flight we encountered 4 aircraft flying below us in formation! What a treat!! Many of these images have blemishes: Pilots know how the old plexi windows look like, and what they do to images. The purpose of the gallery is mainly a documentary, thus I decided to post as many images as possible, regardless their condition. In even our wildest dreams, we could not predict the dramatic events leading to the destruction of this landmark. I used to be a member of Friends of Meigs. But, when I saw that Mayor Daley of Chicago faced no legal consequences, that AOPA dropped their federal law suit, and that the FAA did not support the cause, I simply lost my trust in the system and I gave up my membership. Obviously, others have much more faith in a possible amicable solution. As a matter of fact, in 2004 the FAA finally issued punitive fines against the city of Chicago. However, even after have paid over a million in fines, Mr. Daley was... reelected by the citizens of Chicago in a landslide! Feb 27, 2007: Daley reelected. In Chicago a violation of federal law seem to have no importance at all. It proves once more how little general public cares for aviation. Only pilots like airports, others see them merely as a source of noise. |
