I am currently halfway through my missionary trip in Haiti. I must say it has been an incredibly humbling experience. From the moment I set foot in this country, I recognized the harsh poverty the people of Haiti experience on a daily basis. To people like you and I who have the privilege to live in the US, witnessing the condition of this country is extremely disheartening.
Our first couple days were spent interacting with the natives of this country. We visited Williamson and immediately began to share God’s word with whoever would listen. Walking through the village, we were embraced with love from the kids of this community. The love the children shared with us was incredible. However, I must say the time spent in the villages was at times bittersweet. Not only was being used by God to share His word a blessing but I also witnessed the saving of many lives. At moments however, my heart felt great sorrow for those who did not give their life to Christ. Hearing their stories and the hurdles they have encountered and continue to face can leave someone without hope. Many of them have turned to other “Gods” in hopes of happiness and prosperity. I learned how cultural the Voodoo religion is in Haiti. Many of these people never had a chance for salvation because they inherit the belief of Voodoo. That is why the work God has sent us here to do is so imperative. The imprint we are capable of leaving in these peoples lives and the planting of seeds, has the possibility of changing the ways of any entire country. Although at times their situation it may seem hopeless or the task at hand, the word of God says “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (Romans 12:12)
