P2223772.jpg

Inside our lodge at Thugla. We met fewer than 15 trekkers in the first 3 weeks of this trek. In most lodges we were on our own and this one is no exception. Regular trekkers will recognise the typical furnishings of a Khumbu lodge. We always follow the height gain recommendations (300 metres height gain per day - 1 day's rest every third day) to avoid altitude sickness problems. Younger, fitter trekkers would probably go on to Lobuche from Dingboche but they might then have problems because of the height gain - 600 metres.

I stumble upon this great picture of yours as I spent one night here in October 2003 trek! Great views of the back side of Ama Dablam and Cholatse from here. I remember sitting in these chairs trying warm my bone. Same scene here with the kitchen behind the fluttering curtain, the postings on the wooden cross beams had a picture of the great moutaineer Reinhold Messner. I remembered pointing at his picture and exclaimed "this guy is Reinhold Messner, he scaled 14 8000-meter peaks with no oxygen!". The sleeping quarter is ajacent to this lodge, I had to sleep practically on the floor using blankets of the locals...I didnot bring any, only a thick jacket! I met the owner of this lodge attending Mani Rimdu about a week later! I also remember some American lady trying to investigate where I got my accent from and she uttered one of those words "Minnesota"...this same women slept next to me and sticked her left elbow against my left body...no offence as it was always crowded like that during the trekking season and this happened to be the only main lodge in Tugla. Some day I'll be back!
