Audience, Tiske Monastary Festival
Location:
Leh, Ladakh, India
November 2004

Leh in the Ladakh region has always had a close cultural and trading connection with Tibet. The predominant culture stems from Buddhism. Reflected in the faces of the people is the influence of thousands of years of close relations that the Silk Road trade has influenced. The soft and smooth cheeks of the children are red with sun and wind. As age progresses in the high altitude many of the elders skin is tanned and leathered.
Leh is nestled in a side valley just to the north of the Indus Valley. In this valley are numerous monasteries known as Gompa's. A festival of grand performances by participants with large masks entertains the locals. The audience interest is intense with comprehension of stories performed in dance, mask, and music.
