Royal Exhibition Building

Designed by Melbourne architect Joseph Reed (1823-1890) of Reed and Barnes (1852), the Royal Exhibition Building, situated in the Carlton Gardens, was completed in 1880 for Melbourne’s first International Exhibition.

In 1880 the building hosted the Melbourne International Exhibition and in 1888 the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition was held there to celebrate a century of European settlement in Australia.

The most important event to occur in the Exhibition Building was the opening of the first Parliament of Australia on 9 May 1901, following the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January.

When it was built, it was the largest building in Australia.
The facades and upper structure are made of rendered brick, giving the walls it’s characteristic smooth surface. The roof is a wooden structure supported by steel trusses. The spectacular interior has been completely restored.

During the 1960’s and 70’s, public outcry prevented the Exhibition Building from being demolished.
In 1984 Queen Elizabeth II granted the building the Royal status and in 2004 the Royal Exhibition Building was granted a World Heritage Site listing, the first building in Australia to be granted this status.
