Federation Square.

… “a riotous explosion of steel, glass and abstract geometry”…(Lonely Plant Victoria 2005). What better way to describe this recent addition to Melbourne’s seemingly ever-growing cultural and community development.

Federation Square, constructed to commemorate the first 100 years of Australia’s nationhood, is situated on the corner of Swanson and Flinders Street, directly opposite historic Flinders Street Station.

The Square itself, officially opened in 2003, is built on a huge concrete deck which spans the Flinders Street Railyards.
Upon this deck, a number of exotic buildings have been erected. A central plaza can cope with up to 10,000 people, gathering for after-office relaxation or a variety of cultural events the whole year round.
Initial public reaction to the triangle-based construction and façade cladding of zink, sandstone and glass were varied, but Federation Square has Melbourne at it’s feet.
As for me, I love the place!
