A MADAGASCAR SCRAPBOOK

This trip was taken in l986. We were attracted by the opportunity to see Halley's comet and the fact that it was the first commercial cruise ship circumnavigation of Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world ("exceeded in size only by Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo," said the brochure). I wish I were going today with my digital camera. It was a trip coordinated with Harvard Alumni Association and the M.S. Ambassador operated by Salem-Linblad Cruises (an outfit still operating today) Dr. Lyall Watson, author, Dr. Marcus Chown, Astronomer, and lemur expert, Dr. Alison Jolly, were among the distinguished guest lecturers. Thomas Ritchie was the expedition leader. Among other places we stopped at Diego Suarez, Toamasina, Nosy Boraha, Nosy Varika, Fort Dauphin (the Berenty reserve), Tulear's thorn forest, Morondava, Ile Juan De Nova (with it's ylang-ylang trees whose green blooms produce exotic perfume), Majunga and Nosy Be and Nosy Koma
