In 2015 the Clermont Farm in Berryville VA hired me to document a professional archaeological dig around and the preservation of the historic slave quarters at Clermont Farm in the context of a Virginia Department of Historic Resources grant. Clermont is a 355 acre farm and national historic district located near Berryville, Clarke County, Virgina. George Mason University did the archeology; HistoriCorps along with a cadre of talented volunteers stabilized the building. As my boss and the CEO of the Clermont Farm & Legacy, Bob Stieg, said of the process, "we had to hide it (the former slave quarters) in order to preserve It." It was originally a land grant from Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron to John Vance in 1751. It's ownership is well documented.
