Taliesin West - Scottsdale AZ

I've wanted to visit Taliesin West, the Winter site of Frank Lloyd Wright's practice, for a long time, and eventually got there! It's an extraordinary group of buildings, constructed in the 1930s and 40s by Wright and his students in extremely primitive condidions - no electricity and no running water. In the early days, wright believed that glass in windows was an extravagance, so they built canvas-covered skylights instead, which gave (and still give) a very even light. There is much about the buildings which is disorienting, as there are seldom any right-angles, and doorways and passageways tend to be both narrow and low-ceilinged. The angular furniture on the living room was designed by wright to be built from a single sheet of plywood for under $1 but each chair is now made in Italy for $12,000. everywhere you look there are little design details, and I gave up trying to capture more than a few.
