Dark-eyed Junco nest, April 2010

On April 7, 2010, we discovered a Junco nest in a hanging geranium plant in our back yard. Our best guess, extrapolating back from later developments, is that the nestlings had hatched around April 3. When we first saw them, their eyes were closed; they would be open three days later, April 10. Four days after that, on the morning of April 14, I placed the hanging plant on the ground and moved a stalk so as to get a better view of them as I had previously. This time, the nestlings exploded out of the nest in all directions and quickly took cover, too fast for me to count them. A photo of the nest the day before reveals that there had been five of them. Normal clutch size for the species is 3-5; average time for nestlings to open their eyes is day 7, and to fledge is day 11, according to Birds of North America Online.
