A trip from Half Moon Bay directly west seeking the warm water break, with birds seen in both San Mateo and San Francisco counties (the latter when we were nearer the Farallons than the San Mateo coast.). The highlight was a Hawaiian Petrel which flew across the bow when we stopped and laid a fish oil slick in San Francisco waters. I had the good luck to be standing in the right place, and I got a few distant pictures, one of them reasonably sharp. This stop was also notable for four species of storm-petrels, many Sabine's Gulls, and good views of several Long-tailed Jaegers and one Parasitic. In San Mateo waters, we saw a South Polar Skua on the way out, and a Tufted Puffin on the way back. Huge flocks of Sooty Shearwaters put on an unprecedented show inside Pillar Point Harbor, an awesome spectacle. Cloudy conditions until early afternoon kept the number of good photos down, but all around, an outstanding outing, many thanks to leader Alvaro Jaramillo, and to Matthew Dodder, who spotted the petrel.
