Some birds I photographed on the weekend of September 17-18 in the area around New Haven, Connecticut. I was blessed with good weather as I visited Hammonasset State Beach (Sat. morning, 9/17), Lighthouse Park (Sat. afternoon, 9/17, and Sun. morning 9/18), and Sandy Point (Sun. morning, 9/18). I added three new species to my collection of photographed birds: Little Blue Heron, Piping Plover, and Great Black-backed Gull. (I haven't included gull photos here; they can be found under "Gulls" in the "Bird Types" gallery.) I also was pleased to get great views and some distant photos of a Black Skimmer colony at Sandy Point, and some fairly close pictures of a Baird's Sandpiper, also at Sandy Point. All the pictures in this gallery were taken handheld, using my 300mm f/4 lens with 1.4x extender on my Canon 20D. Thanks to Jim Zipp for his advice on where to go!
