We overnighted New Year's Eve with friends at their house in Moss Landing, as we have every year since 2013. I made my customary New Year's Day start to the birding year with a morning visit to the rocky shore at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula. This has been my only chance to photograph Black Oystercatchers most years, and I found an accommodating pair again; I added photos of Black Turnstones, a Whimbrel, a Black-bellied Plover, a fly-by Brown Pelican in full breeding regalia, and a few landbirds.
