Nuttall's Woodpecker, juvenile

back yard, Stanford campus

Though Nuttall's often pass through our yard, this was the first time I'd seen one at the fountain. According to authorities, the streaked red patch on the front of the crown is found on juveniles of both sexes; the adult male has a larger solid red patch on the rear of the crown and the nape, while the adult female has no red. See http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/image/97490490 and http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/image/97490413 for the contrast of adult male and juvenal red patches.
