Spots rather than bars on the side of the breast and neck mean this is a Short-billed; barring on the flanks is common to both species. This bird also has the muted upperpart pattern (brown and buff rather than black, white, and chestnut) more often found in Short-billed, and the primaries appear to extend beyond the tertials, with their dark tips creating the characteristic Short-billed dark spot in the rear.
