Allen's Hummingbird, female feeding

UC Santa Cruz Arboretum

This is the rare female that can be identified as an Allen's from a photograph alone; the second tail feather out from the middle would be notched if this were a Rufous, and here it is clearly lanceolate (symmetrically spear-shaped). All the identifiable Selasphorus males in the Ruby-cluster bushes in the Arboretum, where these photos were taken, were Allen's.

Really nice shot. I went there a week ago and came emptyhanded. It was windy and humminbirds were flying so fast that I had hard time taking any shots.
