Townsend's Warbler, male

back yard, Stanford campus

The chin feathers are missing, exposing the pink lower part of the bill. An experienced local birder says this may result from eucalyptus gum sticking to those feathers so that they pull out when the bird feeds on flowers. I noticed the same feather gap on a local Yellow-rumped Warbler -- another bird that feeds in eucalyptus trees.
