As anyone who has tried to photograph them knows, these birds are very hard to get close to -- good shots are usually from a car, or a blind. This one was prowling the entrance to Moss Landing Harbor, and the only way to approach was on foot. As the size of this image indicates, I wasn't able to get anywhere near as close as I'd have liked.
