California Quail, juvenile

Strybing Arboretum, San Francisco

California Quail have been rare in San Francisco in recent years, as a result of the depredations inflicted by the city's large feral cat population, a population sustained by a potent cat-lovers' lobby. So I was happy to get this shot of a juvenile quail in Strybing Arboretum, Golden Gate Park.

It's unusual to see any kind of quail at Strybing perched on a natural object, much less a juvenile. I use to go to Strybing every day and I've never seen a juvenile. Great shot considering also that you are lugging a tripod around. I would have had to underexpose this shot in order to get f/8 and 1/320th or so handheld on my 300mm 2.8 IS plus 2x plus 1D Mark II. Feral cats are less common now at Strybing - I have seen more foxes (very rare) than cats there recently.
