Western Bluebird, male, hovering upside down

Stanford campus

Bowdoin Street. This bird was foraging Chinese Pistache trees for berries and/or insects, by flying up into the tree and briefly hovering upside down. I don't recall having seen this hummingbird-like behavior before in this species or in any other songbirds, and a cursory online search didn't turn up any photos or reports of it.
