American White Pelican, breeding plumage

Lake Merritt, Oakland

This is presumably Hank, an American White with an injured wing that has been a year-round resident of Lake Merritt since 2004. Despite the name, Hank is a female, as indicated by its smaller size than males; this can be observed in winter when Hank is joined by a varying number of Whites of both sexes. Both sexes grow the bump on the upper mandible of the bill in breeding season.
