The Interior West (oriantha) subspecies breeds from the Sierras through the Great Basin and the Rockies, and winters in Mexico and the desert southwest of the US. The black of the crown stripes extends to the bill (black lores), resembling the eastern nominate subspecies leucophrys (Sibley's "East Taiga"). It has a dark pink bill and a contrasty back pattern of rufous bordered in gray, similar to Gambel's. See a nesting bird of this species in Montana at http://www.pbase.com/image/115884969 .
