Birds -- Ashland, Oregon, May 2016

On a short visit to Ashland mostly devoted to theater, I brought my camera and long lens and spent the mornings of Friday May 13 and Sunday May 15 photographing birds.

The 5/13 outing started with a walk along Ashland Creek in Lithia Park upstream from the Ashland Park and Rec headquarters; I photographed a banded AMERICAN DIPPER between a quarter and half mile out.

I then went to North Mountain Park, which had many BULLOCK'S ORIOLES, and I was lucky enough to photograph a pair of RED-SHAFTED NORTHERN FLICKERS copulating, something I'd never seen before.

On 5/15 I went to Mt. Ashland Ski Area, where I was alone for several hours, to see and photograph the mountain birds. My primary target was GRAY JAY, a species I hadn't previously photographed. I managed a couple of shots of one at a great distance -- disappointing quality, but better than nothing.

Also photographed during my morning visit: CASSIN'S FINCHES (male shown); a singing male CHIPPING SPARROW; a male DARK-EYED JUNCO, OREGON; a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE; male and female RED-SHAFTED NORTHERN FLICKERS; a male WESTERN BLUEBIRD, including a picture of it entering a nest hole in the shed at the top of the ski-lift; and a bright male YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, AUDUBON.
