This is usually done for religious processions where Saints are carried through the streets in their well decorated perches. It's carried by men wearing their best attire. The presiding catholic priests of the area are a part of this with many other people including girls of all ages dressed up as angels. Regarding the ground decor, is to resemble a carped for the saints, and it is mainly of flower petals, and greenery from pine trees or other scented greens. There are also wood shavings that are finely grounded and then colored in different colors for the ground décor as well, maybe because the house hold in charge of the spot on the ground cannot use flower petals. Looking at this picture I can recall as a child after all was done, playing with the remaining petals and loving the different scents!! I love my childhood in that gorgeous island of Sao Miguel.

This is a beautiful picture. I am wondering are they the petals to all the flowers. It is such a great idea; Is this a special occasion?
