ARCHITECTURE BY YELLOW JACKETS

Fort Worth, TX

Found this in the corner of my covered patio. The architecture of their nest is quite intricate. Too bad they didn't live to see tomorrow. Can't have them right over my head when I walk outside....way too aggressive!!

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
1/20s f/5.6 at 135.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium large auto

Well done under pressure and quite steady at 1/20th, love the looks of these yellow jackets and their building skills. Great shot. V.

Well at least you snapped them before you zapped them, Cindi!
Nice work on both counts! (V)

Wow, they look scary. Nice shot. You are very brave to get this close. Exif says just 135 mm... :-)

it IS a beautiful & intricate design & they sure were busy . . . but I agree . . . hadda go =)
Bernard Davis23-Jul-2009 13:51
Not 100% sure what they are (certaily don't have them in the UK), but I assume they're waspy type things and so, certainly not to be encouraged.
A great picture though.

Love it Cindi! Actually two bit of architecture -- the yellow jackets home and your patio. Like the texture of your patio. You captured the yellow jackets as they were busy. Well done!

In the 60's hippie lingo "that's like WOW man"! Great shot and don't worry about PETA, I support "People Eating Tasty Animals" I'd bet Jennifer likes hamburgers too!:)

Good photo, too bad I had to report you to PETA!

I agree with your solution, and it is a fine photo of architecture! Good job.

ahhhh! Polistes exclamans (for any of you science geeks like me)! i just got rid of four of these nests living around sheila's house. the queen is in the middle tending the brood, while the workers worship her. haha....building the nest, really.

Quite a structure they've created & superb shot, a good thing they were obvious &
you could eradicate them before they decided to swarm and bite!
Guest 23-Jul-2009 00:20
Wonderfull capture, and cratures, too bad they had to go. They do look lean and mean! :) Vµ
Joanne Kamo23-Jul-2009 00:02
