CAMERA ARCHITECTURAL FAILURE

Has anyone have the shutter totally do this before? My camera died last night..thank goodness I have a spare but does anyone know how much this is going to cost to get it fixed? I'm on a tight budget right now...any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I just saw this shot and story Cindi.I am sure by now your problem has been rectified.I had the same camera as you and mine quit this spring.I had close to 100,000 activations on it.I took it in to the camera shop and they said it wouldn't be worth the repair cost to have it fixed.I ended up buying my new Rebel T1i after that and of course just love it.Gosh....100,000 activations and I'm still takin lousy pictures.....hmmmmmm......oh well.

Check with Canon whether they will still cover it under warranty. I think they provide a little leeway. If it is an error 99 message, tech support has a few things they want you to try to reset the camera before sending it in. It did not work for my camera, but maybe it will work for yours. Good luck.

Get a quote first... a good thing you have a back up!

just sent mine in last week for the fatal "error 99" mesage. . . .shutter assembly failed and OF COURSE it was out of warranty. Only shot about 15k pix & I thought the camera was spoz to last for 50K . . . but nevertheless it cost their minimum fix&return price of $180 plus $20 for postage (FedEx actually). Took longer to get it there, recevice t hier assessment & then pay than anything else. As soon as I paid for the camera, had it back THE NEXT day even tho they told me it would take up to 6 days. Go figure.

OMG - that sucks! So very sorry... I'm glad you have a backup camera, I know you have quite a few photoshoots lined up. Hopefully my Sony doesn't do this to me.... wow.

Good luck Cindi, glad you have a back-up!

ouch...my experience is that camera repairs start at $200. Then they look at what has to be done and add more. But they don't ever seem to actually fix anything. I sent my nikon out for repair, and the repair shop couldn't find anything wrong...then nikon issued a recall to repair the issue.

a "weak" spot I mean...

I had this problem recently... had nothing to pay, as it was on warranty, but it took 2 month to repair... other victims: Nicky and Bev... maybe a week spot on Canon stuff...

I don't really see what is wrong exactly, but frankly if it doesn't do pole dance I don't think I see it real well. I had a shutter struck in one of my ealy digital cameras, I did a slight oil job with q-tips, I dont have things repaired, If I can't i just buy new. Anyway the trick worked. As for things breaking at xxx shots, no proof of that. I have one camera at 80,000 and still going strong in all things, except things I have broken by accident. Canon will give you an estimate, b-4 repairing, then u can decide if its not better getting a newer model. I personnaly feel all those repairs usually really don't fix the problem, or just temporarely do the job. Unless u have a reaaaly really really good pro doing the job.

Yikes! Sorry to see this.

Cindi: I had a mirror break in the middle of a wedding shoot. It cost several hundred dollars.... Sorry about that. Back up cameras are great, even if you have to use a film camera. Good luck in finding a camera repair person.

When all else fails, try WD-40.
or duct tape.
(sorry, I don't have any idea ... )

That's your second ouch this week Cindi - careful for number three. Glad you have backup and maybe a little smile will come your way and have it fixed nice and quick and cheap for you. But somehow I doubt it, eh? Like that'll cost aboot $9000 Canadian eh. :)
Dick Lowthian05-Jul-2009 19:39
Sorry this happened, Cindi, but at least you have a backup.
Mike Stobbs05-Jul-2009 19:18
I think it's around $350.00 to get that fixed.....and gone for weeks..sorry to see this happen, how many images on that shutter?
Guest 05-Jul-2009 19:08
No, not fun at all... :-(
pkocinski05-Jul-2009 18:40
First a "boo boo" on your elbow and now a "boo boo" on your camera. You are having one bad time after another :-(
Scott Browne05-Jul-2009 18:03
Not fun at all.
Kevin Chester05-Jul-2009 17:43
Catastrophic, yikes.
Lee Rudd05-Jul-2009 17:05
ouch! yes it can be fixed - but not cheaply.... back to Canon or an authorised agent for a quote methinks. Years ago I managed to do this to two Pentax Z-1's...... bad memories
Walter Otto Koenig05-Jul-2009 16:56
Whoa, sorry to see this. How many images did you take with that shutter? I have read the life of a Rebel is about 50,000. I would take it to a reputable Canon dealer. Looks like it will have to be sent in to Canon. Recently someone from our photo group had a shutter replaced on a Canon Rebel and I believe it cost him around $350. Always good to have a back-up. Good luck Cindi.
Johnny JAG05-Jul-2009 16:05
That looks bad!
Joanne Kamo05-Jul-2009 15:33

Guest 05-Jul-2009 15:27
Nice shot, wish it were for better reasons and I wish I could offer some useful advice.
Ray :)05-Jul-2009 15:23
If you need the shutter replacing, well, that's not cheap! I can't remember how much mine cost last year but I think the equivilant of $250 or more. I'm guessing you use your camera pretty intensely and so this is bound to happen eventually :(
So glad you got a back-up!
sschex05-Jul-2009 15:16
Oh- oh. I can sell you a slightly used d-70. :-) I have no clue what this repair will cost.
Guest 05-Jul-2009 15:15
Wow, feel bad for ya, I have no idea what this will cost :(
