I recently spent the day on a trip to the Katse Dam high in the mountains of Lesotho. This is a dam built to supply water to surrounding South Africa which Lesotho sells to help earn revenue as Lesotho has mostly mountain land and a harsh climate so growing crops is no easy task. I was however struck by the cheerful friendliness of the Lesotho mountain dwellers that we passed and amost envied their simple lives in the harsh stark beauty of the mountain slopes. They travel everywhere on their mountain ponies, using donkeys to transport goods. Their cattle are their wealth and the teenage herdboys sometimes take their charges high up into remote mountains to find grazing where they will spend weeks at a time alone or in pairs. Goats are another method of earning money and Lesotho mohair is some of the finest in the world. Most of these images are grabbed shots taken from the vehicle as we travelled so some of them are rather blurred, but they do capture the essence of the day so I have included them.
