Baby Victor - A Fleeting Moment in Our Lives

Baby Victor - a fleeting moment in our lives, but never forgotten.
You were a miracle from the beginning. Your mummy Helen was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour (Medulloblastoma) in 2002. After 3 brain operations, radiation and chemotherapy we thought that her eggs would be sterile. Thanks to her brilliant brain surgeon Dr Semple, she made a remarkable recovery.

Your daddy Dan is Swedish ( http://www.allaboutdan.com/ ) and was living in London. Your mummy is South African and was living in Ficksburg a small town in the middle of the country. They met on-line - got together in London, fell in love, lived together for 6 months and you were the result.

They did not want to know your sex and named the bump "Balthazar" after a cartoon character! There was such excitement at the thought of your arrival - and great preparation! You were so welcome - so wanted. Mummy and Daddy moved out to South Africa to a roomy flat in Durban overlooking the sea and began preparing for your birth. There was a surprise Baby Shower for you.

The Jacarandas and Tabebuia were flowering and the 2010 soccer stadium below was growing. Vervet monkeys swung on the trees below the flat (and sometimes raided it!) Everyone rejoiced when your little cousin James was born. Mummy held him, anticipating your birth in three months time. Daddy had to go back to London after 6 months to renew his visa and Mummy came back home to the Free State to visit us.

Nobody can explain why Mummy went into premature labour, and had to be rushed through to the nearest hospital an hour away in the middle of the night. The caring doctor decided that you would be better off born in Durban and Mummy was rushed down by ER 24 Ambulance to her doctor in Durban. We could only follow the next day but they were already doing an emergency Cesarean section.

You lived for only three hours. They said you had already been sick for two weeks when you were born. You died as we travelled through Golden Gate National Park and that beautiful place will always remind me of you. Mummy still had you with her when we got there and we were able to hold you and marvel at how perfect you were with your Daddy's little face. I photographed you for Mummy and Daddy and did watercolours of you for them.

Your Aunt Debbie made a beautiful scrapbook to commemorate you and this gallery is to celebrate your existence - the miracle of you. Nothing that is loved is ever lost.
