Rancho Naturalista has a mercury vapor light and white sheet set up in the forest a short distance from the lodge. This is a permanent setup with a heavy tarp protecting it from the weather. The light is turned on for any new group that requests it, and although the original purpose was to allow visiting entomologists to see the tremendous diversity of insects, particularly moths, it is now used primarily to allow birders to see the many birds that are attracted to a free meal in the morning. Although I was also interested in the birds, and in fact saw and photographed some species only at the light, my main interest was the moths. Not wanting to photograph them on the white sheet, I carefully coaxed each one onto a leaf, then moved them to the bench where I had more leaves as a background. I still have considerable work left in trying to identify all the moths, and it is quite likely that I will never get them all to the species level.
