Perched immature Red-shouldered Hawks can be told from immature Red-taileds by their longer tail and more distinctive tail patterns, and by the barring on their secondaries, tertials, and greater coverts, giving a hint of the "checkerboard" wing pattern so obvious on adult Red-shouldered Hawks.
