A closer look at this bird that was initially called "Ashy" by yours truly and others reveals an extensive dusky carpal bar extending almost to the leading edge of the wing, long, pointed wings, and traces of white in the tail. Even the dark rump shows up as being a lighter color than the rest of the bird, with a contrasting dark central stripe extending from the base of the tail. Compare this photo with the following image, which, although poor in quality, is clearly a light-rumped Leach's Storm Petrel. Notice that the carpal bar, wing shape, and notched tail match on both birds.
This Leach's Storm-petrel was one of more than a record-setting 35+ nearshore Leach's Storm-petrels seen on the 8/3/12 Shearwater Journeys trip.
