Tan Mai Orphanage

My second day in Vietnam I visited Tan Mai Orphanage with my translator. I met the nuns overseeing the current school. Although they were not there at the time of my stay from birth Sept 1972 to Operation Babylift April 1975, they introduced me to a woman who had also been at the orphanage at the same time as me. She was a teenager when I was a baby, one of several who helped take care of the younger ones. She later took me to a shelter for elderly where I met others like her who were also from Tan Mai. One woman even recognized my smile! Crazy, I'd never met anyone who knew me from Vietnam. It was an amazing emotional experience. There was also a woman who I shed tears with; a woman who was blind and bedridden. She was a caretaker who had been an orphan herself at Tan Mai. No one who left Tan Mai had ever come back to visit her as she is now in a shelter for elderly. She made my entire trip worthwhile. I guess I had always thought that I might meet nuns who took care of me; it never donned on me that older orphans had taken care of me and had helped in my evacuation, knowing they themselves would be staying.
