Fernandina's Flicker

Colaptes fernandinae

This beautiful endemic is also best sought in the Zapata region. We regularly observed a pair of these birds at the entrance to the woodland at Bermejas, whilst another pair was present around the crocodile farm at La Boca. It is threatened by habitat loss, including loss of old trees with suitable holes as a result of hurricanes. Arturo Kirkconnell is currently radio-tracking this species.
