Morphological variation in this species, which was subdivided into 'northern' and 'southern' species by Hilty (2003), is best expressed in females. Three species of this genus are found in this region, namely F. grisea as well as Rusty-backed Antwren F. rufa and Black-bellied Antwren F. melanogaster.
