Dendroplex picus
Barreira do Campo, Pará, January 2009
Straight-billed Woodcreeper and Zimmer's Woodcreeper D. kienerii were formerly placed within the large genus Xiphorhynchus, but recent genetic data support their classification in a genus apart, and led Aleixo et al. (2007) to resurrect Dendroplex, Swainson, 1827, as the genus for these two species. Work in progress may lead to multiple species being recognised within D. picus. Equally, many currently recognised species, especially within the nominate group of taxa, are almost certainly unworthy of recognition under any serious alpha taxonomy.
