Mato Grosso, Brazil, August 2007

This trip immediately followed my visit to western Mato Grosso in search of Black-and-tawny Seedeater. Together with a group of friends I joined a trip organised by Guy Kirwan (GMKirwan@aol.com; http://www.freewebs.com/guykirwan), who spends up to six months per year in Brazil guiding trips all over the country, to the Chapada dos Guimaraes, Pantanal and Cristalino Jungle Lodge, near Alta Floresta. We saw a great many of the endemics and specialties of the region, including Chapada Flycatcher, Rufous-sided Pygmy Tyrant and many other cerrado endemics, as well as a Jaguarundi, in the Chapada, followed by a great many fantastic birds and other wildlife of the Pantanal. In addition to birding the famous Transpantaneira road, we also spent several nights at the SESC reserve, which makes an excellent and very comfortable base with lots of birds and mammals 'on tap' along the nearby trails and roads, including Hyacinth Macaw, Mato Grosso Antbird, White-lored Spinetail, Chestnut-bellied Guan, and Giant Otter. We then flew to Alta Floresta to visit the famous Cristalino Jungle Lodge. Highlights were many but it was particularly pleasing to see an Ocellated Poorwill at its nest in daylight, nighttime looks at an Agami Heron from our boat, two Razor-billed Curassows on our way into the lodge on the first evening, Brown-banded Puffbird (too high to photograph), several Tapirs (see my other gallery), and much much more. After the trip, Wim van der Schot and I visited REGUA, near Rio de Janeiro (see other gallery), whilst Guy had a few days off prior to starting a new tour to north-eastern Amazonia, and the rest of the group flew home.
