Hi Kees. I miss your presence on PhotoSig, but I am certainly glad to have found you here. You have a way making your lens go much deeper than the visual surface. A rare talent. This photo, as far as I am concerned, is one of the great street scene photos of all time.... in its poverty it is extremely rich. All my very best....looking forward to catching up with your work. When Fidel Castro turned to Communism in 1961 and the Cuban embargo began, there were 150,000 American cars on the island. In the 50s Cuba had imported more Cadillacs, Buicks, and DeSotos than any other nation; in 1958 Havana had more Cadillacs per capita than any city in the world.
Forty years later, most of them are still on the road. To the Cubans, only a car from 1935 or earlier is a "classic." Models from the 50s and 60s - they're just cars.
Most of the cars throughout the country are in poor condition; spare parts for the engines and the body have been modified from Russian cars or scavenged; a car may be lucky enough to have a new coat of house paint to protect it, but most of the time it is shedding its skin as it cruises through the salty coastal air. These are not the romantic cars of your dreams. They are simply junkyard machines kept running because riding around on a horse is an unappetizing alternative.

Funny that whenever I see shots of Cuba there's always old Oldsmobiles, Chevy's and such. Looks like the keep them running longer there than we do here. Might be a "Must Do", eh.
