Ancestral Shrine Object: Dagara/Lobi Ancestral Figurines

There three figurines were part of a total collection of ritual objects taken from a family in Lasie Tuolu, northwest Ghana. The owner has been converted to Christianity and handed the objects over to the Parish Priest. In each basket; three ancestral figurines standing for the human life form and personality. The tree from which they are made derives its life resources from the soil or Earth. They can come in different sizes. As part of the white bagr of Dance when the neophytes have been given a bath in the river and made to dance in the house, they then perform a peculiar ceremony for the ancestors by carrying the ancestral divination statuettes and made to dance around the house including the animal pens before being chased into the Long Common Room where they will hear the recitation of the bagr text for the first time. The statuettes become part of the bagr healing shrine by making a link to the other ancestral statuettes which the individual may come to inherit as the most senior son following the death of the father. Hardwood with patina and sacrificial blood (19.5 cm)
