The reason for the change is space and weight. Aluminum allows for a more efficient exchange of heat (dissipation) than traditional copper and brass components at a fraction of the size and weight. This improves gas efficiency, allows engines to be operated at higher temperatures (to reduce emissions), and offers more design flexibility.
