After receiving a gift of cattle in the late 1700s, the king of Hawaii brought in cowboys from Mexico to manage his growing herd of aggressive animals. The resulting cowboy/ranch culture is referred to as paniolos.
The highlands of Hawaii have excellent grazing lands for cattle and the still active Parker Ranch (150,000 acres) is considered the largest ranch in the United States.
