In addition to intensive irrigated agriculture (often taro) Hawaiians also developed fish farming by building fish ponds along the coast. Gates regulated the flow of water and the size of fish that could pass between the ponds and the ocean.
These ponds were first constructed hundreds of years ago but have recently been extensively rehabilitated.
