TC Photo Club Thursdays Meeting – January 7, 2010
Bob Boivert chaired the meeting; 10 people attended.

PHOTOSHOP CLASS: Picture Package, Contact Sheet, Actions
Ron St. Louis and Bob Boisvert gave a presentation on sheet printing and automated tasks.

“Picture Package” – Optional Plug-in
“Picture Package” will provide, on a single sheet, multiple copies of a single photo, similarly to school photos. “Picture Package” will do the Cut and Paste for you and the resizing to fit the selected sizes. You can select the sizes you want and Photoshop will provide a placement grid. Flatten All Layers will create a single layer of all the photos (each Cut and Paste placement creates a new layer). (This is different than Merge Down that is used to merge just a few layers)

“Contact Sheet” – Optional Plug-in
“Contact Sheet” refers to the way proofs were prepared by laying down negatives strips on photographic paper. “Contact Sheet” will basically copy and paste a series of pictures for you on a single sheet, on a grid pattern. Once you selected a folder/pictures, choose the resolution (300 pixels is good; smaller it becomes difficult to see things; bigger the advantage is lost), the number of columns and rows, etc. “Contact Sheet” doesn’t take in account landscape or portrait feature.

“Actions”
“Actions” is the equivalent of a Word macro for Photoshop. An Action is a series of automated tasks to be performed on a source image. Through Actions, you can change an image size, apply corrections, textures and save the result in the selected format and chosen location. It’s very useful for preparing a series of pictures for the web or email for example. Some predefined Actions are provided but the interest is in creating your own Action. Ron St. Louis gave a demo and it’s a quite simple process. A stop can be put after any task, ex to adjust the cropping.

For example, Actions can be used to create an automated image-sharpening tool with High Pass Filter. http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/sharpen-high-pass/. That can then be saved as a hot key.

Club Walk for January 14, 2010
The world-renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky is currently presenting an exhibition at Carleton University. Next week walk will take us to visit that exhibition. Please send an email to Bob Boivert to confirm your interest. We’ll go probably by cab/car. Mr. Burtynsky will give a lecture on Sunday January 10, 2 p.m., Carleton University’s Tory Building.

Future Talks
· January 21, 2010 – Lightroom by Ann Milligan

“Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a photography software program developed by Adobe Systems for Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows, designed to assist professional photographers in managing thousands of digital images and doing post production work. It is not a file browser like Adobe Bridge, but rather an image management application database which helps in viewing, editing, and managing digital photos.”
