Challenge 28: Shape and Form. From Patterns to Details

The point of this exercise is to examine objects or scenes and explore shapes and form. Think of shooting for Black and White photography where colour will not be available to enhance or distract. Participants are encouraged to convert their images to Black and White (but not necessary).

For those with little or no experience in B&W conversion bring your photo in or email it to Ron St. Louis if you'd like help with conversion. We can quickly go over a few examples to demonstrate how to do so in Photoshop next Thursday (July 15).

HINT: Patterns and details make great subjects for this type of photograhy.


3 entries per person.
Shooting dates from Noon July 8th to midnight July 19th.
Voting from July 20th to 22nd.

#4 is located in Arnprior from the river. I kayaked from Quyon to Arnprior towards the dam.
Ron - exactly what I thought - I will look for the color version and put in my pics.

I find that any nature shots converted to b&w seem robbed of warmth. The sky and the plant ones especially. However, the man-made structures and objects seem to receive the treatment as a compliment.

#1 the shape and form are just so fusioned here, nice concept;

#15 color contrast while b&w as basis; so clear and sharp, shape and form. Xu

Oh, and one more comment... (not a vote) , number eight is an interesting presentation; we all have a tendency to present images in the same way we took them. This was a fun way to show a concept. BB

I will vote for No 2.
It has some haunting qualities - hard to describe.
Comments: just a tad too centered, and I would have increased contrast a bit.
There are many other great choices here this week. I particularly liked 8, 10, and 15

#11 takes it for me as well.

I do also like 8 for meeting this particular challenge.
I thought 16 was something totally different until I saw it full-size. I really like it but think that it could use a little more contrast or something.

Wow. There were a of really great photos, but I choose 11. I also loved the one of the cottage stairs, as well as loose hem. The windsurfer shot was an amazing photo, but did not represent the challenge as much to me.

WOW really hard to choose. Really like 5, 8, 11 and 13. Not sure 12 is black and white or just white flowers? So finally, I'll go with # 11 as my favourite but they were all great. There's something to be said about Black and White pictures. Great work everyone. Thanks for sharing.

All these great entries make it so hard to decide. Lots of great stuff. Good work everyone.

#11 gets my vote. The simplicity and flow in really draws me in. Beauty.


The closest contender for me was #2 because I love the softness and the depth of field here. I'm not sure but I thought it could maybe use just a touch more contrast or a bit darker.

A perfect example of when to convert to B&W is #4 . I haven't seen the colour version but I'm sure the vibrant greens in the photo would completely distract from the shape and form of the staircase. Without the colour, the eye is led up and down the staircase instead of scanning the bushes for something that might not be there.

My vote is for #13. I like the symetry of the leaves even though they alternate along the stem. The water drops add to the picture. Good work all.

I vote for # 13 as it is visually very interesting...but it was a difficult decision because so are #'s 1, 2, and 15. Finally I want to know where # 4 is located.

I vote for #14, because I like the lines in this capture - the Focus on the rain drops and the out of focus BG.
