Grey Goshawks, (whom are actually white) can be found in areas surrounding Beaconsfield lately.
Sighted eating road kill on Auburn Rd on posts and in flight several times.

Beautiful reference pictures.. I am not knowledgeable with birds of prey , have seen a beautiful white large bird a few times, watched it eat either a black and yellow cockatoo or other la bird. Had large feathered thighs, , black tips on the flesh or brown colored beak, flattish head with black eyes. Sorry not very clear description, any Idea what sort of bird it is anyway???? . Live in the Tamar Valley estuary Thank you for this lovely site

Hi Liz, You don't mention where you live (I'm assuming Tasmania), but Brown Goshawks are more likely the species. I occasionally get them in my garden in Bellerive. They and the sparrowhawk are difficult to tell apart, unless you're familiar with both. Goshawks are commoner than sparrowhawks, particularly in the South-east. Both are partial to small birds!

Do you know of the collared sparrowhawk? I think that we have one comes to check out our sparrow population every day. It is only about 35 centimetres long,dark all over,with a short curved beak. Seem s to have a large wingspan in comparison to its size.

We have been privileged this year to have witnessed the local Goshawks mate, nest, raise 2 chicks and get them trained.all in the paddock at the rear of our house. They are about the same size as a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and if you didn't know the difference you would dismiss them as such....what a sight!!
I don't have any photos, because everytime I saw them I was outside and the camera was inside!. I tried to capture them but my lens is not good enough.
Maybe if you are in our area next year (mid Jan) at Gravelly Beach, you can come up and take a few shots for you collection..otherwise I will have to borrow someones camera to take better shots of them for you.!!
