Day 6 LOST. Camped at the headwaters of Sg Paung. 28Aug87. Click to read report.

Early rise to make up for lost time. Set off at 9am. Trail northerly downhill, missed a breakoff to the adjacent adjoining low connecting ridge. We contoured instead into Kelantan, slashing our way thru rattan thickets into the headwaters of Sg.Chik Dak, the upper reaches of the notorious Sg. Brok or Sg Nengerri. Anyway we were very low on water then! We were at 5420'. We replenished water and cooked lunch and dinner and then packed to save valuable trekking time and precious water.
11.30am we set off, climbing up a spur ahead cutting back west to regained height and the elusive summit ridge. Back on course, we descended downhill encountering rattan thickets yet again. By now our bodies bruised and lacerated by thorns and vicious hooks of rattans and undergrowths. Most cuts incurred by Rambo Amran Khan and agile Moose. Reached spot height 5407 at 2.30pm. Ahead north- westerly G.6850 and its southern shoulder we were supposed to climbed. We were happy at the rate of our progress then. Afteer some snacks, we moved; misty environment added to our misjudgement has us drifted south-west when we should be on course west and north into the broken country ridge up the southern shoulder of G. 6950. Taking a west, south-west heading along a well defined ridge, all the while presuming and hoping it would petered to the desired heading but it never did. We pushed our luck too far. Realising our mistake, we halted.
Some clambered up a tree while others went scouting in diferent directions. A breakm in the mist confirmed that we had overshot and went down the Sg. Kinta valley. It was decided that we contoured back rather than backtracking the whole distanceback up to spotheight 5407. We contoured a few hills before descending to make camp by a stream, the headwaters of the west flowing Sg Paung. The rest setting tents, Bakar and Rambo blazed uphill to scout for possible route uo the elusive G. 6850. Stumbled upon a virgin waterfallwith deep black swirling pool at the base. Back at camp everyone is relax; panic button never pressed. Down we were but out we never. Brewed tea. Sandflies a nuisance. After dinner, had a preview with topo, compass and altimeter. Bakar lay in the stillness and the silence of the night, pondering contigency plans. For heavy is the head that wears the crown but it was made easier by a all terrain experienced team.
