Fengdu: Demolishing a city

Fengdu, also known as the Ghost City, is honouring its name and rapidly turning into a ghost town. Upon completion of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) in 2008, this large city will be completely submerged by the rising water of the Yangtze.

This is a bird's eye view of the "old" Fengdu. The photo was taken from the Ming Shan mountain. Sorry for the poor quality as it was hazy and cloudy. The city is almost deserted and bulldozers and trucks are demolising and cleaning up the city because the city will completely submerged and therefore may post a danger to passing ships. It's a very strange feeling to wander in Fengdu and think that only a few years ago, this was buzzling city on the bank of the Yangtze.

The new city is being built at higher ground on the opposite bank of the river.
