Hadrian's Wall , along Highshield Crags

Highshield Crags , Northumberland,England,UK

When people talk of Hadrian's Wall,it's easy to get carried away, with dreams of the wall in its original form, but the truth is that even after 30-40 years of reconstruction/restoration,there's not much of it available to specifically identify. What with abandonment, lack of any rebuilding for centuries, then stonerobbing,on often a grand scale;just look at the castles and abbeys constructed in Wall blocks, then weathering and grass growth on tumbled walls, and this is why I've included this shot. It's a good example of how a lot of Hadrian's Wall looks today. In this sector, the Wall has largely collapsed and overgrowth has incorporated it into the hillsides. In this shot, the Wall which once stood 15 feet high to the walkway,is now barely 3 feet high as a grassy mound.Behind the cliff, past the lough, can be seen a straight lined wall. That is a modern wall on the line of Hadrian's Wall.
